The engineered stone ban
Engineered stone has been banned in Australia since 1 July 2024. It cannot be supplied or installed in a new kitchen. If your current kitchen has an engineered stone benchtop:
- Everyday use is not the concern. The health risk comes from cutting, grinding or polishing it.
- Removal and minor work are only allowed under strict safety controls, so ask how it will be removed.
- Replacement must be with a different material.
Some newer low-silica or silica-free surfaces are on the market. Their composition should be checked against the current rules before selection.

Why was engineered stone banned?
Engineered stone was banned in Australia from 1 July 2024 because cutting and processing it exposes workers to respirable crystalline silica, which can cause silicosis. The ban covers the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs.
What is the most popular alternative?
Porcelain slabs are a common choice for their stone-like look, heat resistance and low maintenance. Natural stone, solid surface, timber and high-pressure laminate are also widely used, depending on budget and style.
Is porcelain durable enough for an island?
It is hard-wearing, heat resistant and stain resistant. Its main weakness is chipping on edges from heavy impact, which is why edge profile and fabrication quality matter.
What splashback works best with a porcelain benchtop?
Many kitchens run the same porcelain slab up the wall for a seamless look. Large-format tiles, glass, or a contrasting natural stone are also popular.
